The game plan was a simple one for the New York Rangers. Stay out of the penalty box. Take a lot of shots. Win the game. They didn’t execute. They lost.
So the Rangers took the ice knowing that the Coyotes have a weak power play and have been unable to score five on five. The Blueshirts were fresh from a game in which they gave up three power play goals and took ten penalties. It was glaringly obvious that a good start was needed and they had to stay out of the penalty box.
So, six and a half minutes into the game, cheap arizona coyotes hockey jersey
Brendan Smith takes an absolutely unnecessary boarding penalty when he crushed Christian Fischer into the boards. 46 seconds later Oliver Ekman-Larsson put one past Henrik Lundqvist and the rout was on.
Exactly three minutes later Mario Kempe got a loose puck in the slot and put a shot past Lundqvist for a two goal lead. The first period ended with the Rangers outshot by Arizona 18-5. It’s worse than that. Arizona took 29 shots to the Rangers’ ten. The Rangers didn’t get a shot on goal for the first 8:16 of the game. Arizona had seven by that time.
Three more goals in the second period followed and it’s three losses in a row for the Rangers. 18 goals allowed. Three goals scored.
It’s not worth even discussing this game except to say that it was a disaster. The Rangers were outplayed, outhit, outshot, out everythinged. I can honestly say that the Rangers had one memorable shot on goal, a Chris Kreider breakway that Darcy Kuemper saved rather easily.
